If your user permissions allow, you can mute a community member. This removes their ability to post and comment in the community. This can be useful if someone is posting harmful messages or otherwise not following community norms.
After a period of time (for example, after contacting them to discuss their behavior) you can unmute the person, restoring their ability to post and comment.
You can mute moderators and channel owners, as well as members.
Figure 1. Community Managers can mute any user who posts in Community.
Muting and Unmuting
Muting users is controlled by roles and permissions. For information, see "Roles and Permissions" below.
Here are the steps:
- Navigate to a channel, and find a message from the person you wish to mute
- Click “...” next to the message
- Click Mute User
Campus Cloud displays a mute icon next to the person’s name, indicating that Mute has been engaged for them.
To unmute a person:
- Navigate to a channel, and find a message from the person you wish to mute
- Click “...” next to their name
- Click Unmute User
Once you mute a user
Muted users are not banned from the community -- they can still read messages posted by other students. However, once you mute a user:
- The person can no longer post or comment in any community channel
- They cannot edit their existing messages
- They cannot send direct messages to other app users
Muting a user is a global action affecting all channels within the community at a single school. If your school has multiple campuses, mute affects only one campus at a time.
A Muted user will see the following error when they attempt to post on the community:
"You are not allowed to perform this action because your user currently has restricted privileges. Contact your campus administrators for more details."
